Heatley Hornets 4(+1)-3 (+1)Lymmawatras
It's a game of 2 halves. The 2nd being shorter than the 1st
Heatley Hornets: McGrail (C), Shaw, Wadsworth (1), Goodier, Napier-Hemy, Kandola, Waldron, Royle, Hawkins (2), Marshall (1), Rowley, Willis.
Lymmawatras: Perrin, Allen, Hamill, Stanley, Melia (2), Foster, Charvill, Hodges, Morgan, Meadows (c) Owen (1), Smith.
Gentleman John McGrail graced the field with his presence, starting off the evening with, " You know the only match I've won as captain was the one I didn't play in." Hornets, despite his presence started off very brightly, with their back 4 not touching the ball for probably 15 mins. Up front the energetic Hawkins, the solid Marshall and skilful Rowley (still pondering that decision to spurn LA Galaxy and stay with Lymmdads) ran amok. The midfield were a solid defensive unit with the young nipper Royle being everywhere. Hornets were 4 - 0 up by 40 minutes. There was a 5th possibly which was disallowed because Hawkins was only 10 metres on side when he started his run. Hawkins however bagged 2, chasing long balls and finishing deftly on the 4th or 5th attempt and then a penalty. Marshall scored after a skilful flick from Rowley and Wadsworth drove into the bottom corner. The Hornets defence had done nothing and it looked like "Game Over". Newton, watching from the sidelines, packed up and went off to BetFred to put an extra tenner on Hornets.
Lymmawatras had other thoughts however. Hodges, Perrin and Melia were commanding as the game entered its 2nd half. Owen scored a superb volley into the far corner from the edge of the box and Melia scrapped with Kandola before finishing with aplomb. Hornets were scared and then Melia delivered the killer blow, deflecting the driven shot past Shaw in goal. It was then that 'Watras regetted that none of them had shouted for the handball, when Napier-Hemy had raised his arm to protect himself from the flying Hodges early on in the 1st half. 'Watras were rampant now and only a miracle could save Hornets and McGrail. Lights out after a 25 minute half and the games was indeed over with an historic Hornets victory.
Was it Newton for financial reasons, or was it McGrail to save face? We will never know, but the FA timekeeping committee will be involved. Lord Stevens will be a busy man in Lymm in the coming weeks.
